Teddy Wilson’s playing style is immediately identifiable at almost any point in his professional career, which spanned almost a half-century. “Elegant, precise and sophisticated” are some of the frequent terms critics used, while pianist Dick Hyman, who won ten lessons with Wilson during the 1940s, was very impressed with his use of tenths in his improvisations. Wilson had a long association with Benny Goodman, since he and vibraphonist Lionel Hampton helped the clarinetist launch the first major integrated jazz band, while he continued to occasionally record and tour with Goodman in the remaining years of his life. But there were other facets to the Texas native’s career, which began in 1929. His attempt at leading a big band after leaving Goodman was a financial flop, though Wilson made noteworthy recordings accompanying vocalists Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Mildred Bailey. He began a prolific recording career, usually leading a trio or playing solo piano, though he sometimes worked with larger groups. One of his last appearances was with Benny Goodman in a 1985 public television special. Teddy Wilson died of cancer in the summer of 1986, not long after Goodman’s death.
