Since it’s inception in 1990, the Hal Galper Trio’s music has been at the forefront of post-bop mainstream jazz. This recording of their concert at the Manchester Craftmens’ Guild in February documents the realization of the trio’s musical identity. The trio’s extensive touring schedule has afforded them the chance to play together night after night, creating a tight-knit group that’s exhibits extraordinary rapport. Hal Galper, Jeff Johnson, and Steve Ellington have integrated their vast and varied musical experience into a unified concept that merges the elements of the post-bop era. The group’s tendency toward collective improvisation and freedom within the structure creates a fugue-like effect that is balanced by their commitment to melodic invention, a deeply swinging groove and a profound desire to communicate with it’s audience. Their “devil-may-care” approach to performing rewards both audience and musician alike with unexpected surprises. “We never know what’s coming next” says Hal,” and each member of the trio takes the music wherever he feels it should go at any moment. The relationship between piano, bass and drums can change from moment to moment.” A trio in it’s truest sense, the Hal Galper Trio presents to their listeners a rare musical experience.
